where Rani meets art.
i believe everything outside us and within us is aesthetic; is art; is very human yet very extraordinary.
Videography
EXISTENCE: I made this edit for the job interview regarding the function of Digital Content Creator at THUAS.
After brainstorming for a while whether or not to go completely crazy with FX and layering and what not, I decided that simplistic aesthetics is what I really wanted to bring to the screen this time.
I captured most of the footage recently with my new iPhone 13 Pro Max camera (and of course the DJI OM 5 stabiliser). For editing software I solely relied on Final Cut Pro; I chose for this consciously as to not get carried away with After Effects. This would kill the purpose of keeping it simple.
With this video, I hope to deliver the message of who I am and what is absolutely fundamental to me; love. Love for my beloved ones, for my work, my surroundings, the universe outside and the universe within.
I'd like to think this will be a great way to introduce myself to the interviewers :)
GOODBYE: For this edit I tried digital drawing for the first time ever. I used the software Procreate on the iPad and followed a YouTube tutorial in order to understand all the tools available within the software.
Creating this rather short edit with digital drawing took me 3 weeks; quite an adventure and challenge it was!
I used Final Cut Pro on my Macbook for the motion effect (layering all the drawings to realise the effect of moving pictures). The end result is all edited in Final Cut (with the extra effects, the layers and the music).
This edit is very dear to me; not only because it serves as closure in losing a loved one, but also because it was the first time that I turned drawings into motion.
ORIGINS: A very old edit, however it will always remain one of my own favourites due to several reasons which I will elaborate below.
I created this video during a time where I was teaching myself how to work with velocity and depth of field. Experimenting with visuals closely synced with music became a very fun way for me to train my eye (and ear!) for detail.
Along the way, when editing this video, I discovered that there are no rules or boundaries in editing (that's the beauty of art). So I decided to mix real life footage with fiction (such as anime scenes) to add that little bit of extra curiosity I intended.
The most important part of this edit - to me - became the philosophy behind it.. The reason I chose for close up particles and atoms as the main subject:
You never really "touch" anything. If you put your hands together, there is an electron force field that repels the other atoms and what you feel is the back pressure of all those atoms repelling each other. We never truly kissed, we never truly hugged, we never truly held hands.. fxxk it.
WORK X-MAS: This was a side-project assigned to me by the KICK coordinator of the Frontoffice FZ&IT. The request was to create a fun and approachable Season greetings video.
Unfortunately, because of the short notice I was given in being asked to make this edit, I couldn't capture all the footage myself. All departments within the KFS unit were asked to record their own team, with their own phone cameras; this is not a favorable way for me to work, but as we say in Dutch: "We moeten roeien met de riemen die we hebben!"
I edited all the separate footage into one whole item in Final Cut Pro. The layers and special effects were created by myself, using a GIF-maker program online and then added to the video in FCP. I also improved a majority of the bad audio as much as I could with noise reducing and brightening voice effects.
The most fun and experimental part for myself personally was making the intro. I used Adobe AE for its advanced features for intros and outros. The sound effect is a stock audio I downloaded for free; picked this one specifically for dramatic effect ;)
Truthfully, it wasn't my best work and it was quite a challenge to make all the different footage and audio come together as one, but it was a fun project and I was flattered to be asked for this assignment.
GTA VHS: This videogame edit was created through quite a process to achieve the final result. I've used a various of software, but I will explain the main ones to keep it brief.
When playing the videogame Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA V); it allows you to record however much you'd like from the game-session. I played it often on the PS3, hence this is where I created the basics of my footage.
After recording whatever scenes from the videogame, you can switch to the software called "Rockstar editor" within the game itself. On this software, you can view back your recorded footage and then change the camera angles in literally any way you want, as well as adjusting the colours, the speed, the camera lens and so on. However, all of this can only be done on that specific software in the videogame.. So it takes some good gaming hands to be able to edit very specifically with a gaming controller.
Once I felt that all the scenes are somewhat how I imagined them to be, I uploaded them to my private YouTube account to ensure the quality doesn't get compressed. From there on, I switched over to my laptop in order to continue editing on Final Cut Pro and Adobe AE with the footage I retrieved back from my YouTube.
I used many layers and FX to get the retro, VHS style look that I was going for.
I grew up playing videogames and I still love it. Bringing two of my favourite hobbies together (editing and gaming) has been amazing to me.
This is only one of many videogame edits I've made; most of the edits were requested commissions and some are still viewable on my gaming Instagram page. You can find the link at the bottom of this portfolio - should you be interested to take a peek :3
THE LANDING: Another videogame edit which I created exactly the same way as explained in the description of the GTA VHS video above.
However, this time I used Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects instead of FCP. So really, the methods and tools remain the same. There was no specific reason to why I worked with a different software for this edit; I just felt like switching it up for a change!
The landing is another GTA edit, but less layered and more focused on the concept I was experimenting with: creating an arthouse cinema style short edit.
I used a French intro to strengthen the message I was trying to portray and consciously decided to leave translation out in order for the viewer to completely rely on their own perception of the video.
However, here's the translation for those that don't know how to google ;)
"This is the story of a man that falls down from a 50 story building. On his way down past each floor, he keeps telling himself “so far, so good, so far, so good”. But the fall doesn’t matter.. The landing does."

Graphic design
News Letters: As a side-project for different departments at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, I was requested to design their News Letters.
For both commissions, I created seasonal layouts (such as for Christmas, Easter, etc).
And for my own department (Frontoffice FZ&IT, Unit KFS), I was allowed to completely renew the standard layout for our weekly News Letters.
I designed all of these layouts with specific graphic design software: Adobe Illustrator and Affinity Designer on my Macbook.
These side-projects were a lot of fun and allowed me to use my own creativity, within the rules and branding book of the organisation.
